My interview for Heroine's Journey with Peter De Kuster

The Heroine’s Journey of Ekaterina Abramova

Posted by PETERDEKUSTERonSEPTEMBER 5, 2017

What is the best thing that I love about my work? My work is my life. My whole life I do what I love. So I can say I am lucky))! It’s not easy but it’s worth it. Artist’s life is absolutely amazing journey always unpredictable and full of surprises. Not only good surprises but always important ones for you to grow as a human being and artist.

An artist shows the way to others and must be highly educated and spiritual person.

I love to learn, I am learning every moment when I am at the canvas, something wiser and much more powerful than I am myself painting through me, and this feeling is so strong and beautiful that I can only keep going, keep making love with life and art.

My artist statement is — In my art, I am searching for Man.

And my mission — to dig that Man out and bring Him forth in each of us.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? I think happiness is happiness)), it can’t be perfect or imperfect. And my happiness is my freedom, my art, my Tribe — the people I love and care about, and travels. Actually I am happy almost every time, even when I cry and feel sad, — at the same time I am happy because I feel, I can express my feeling and I am alive! Every day I am learning from the world around and myself — so this is also happiness. To know yourself — is happiness. I have people around me who I can rely on. My family. 3 absolutely beautiful and talented kids, my husband who understands me and my nature, my friends who are here for me, and I am always here for them. I am very happy to be in my studio working, thinking, painting, and I know when I am done for today then I have my tribe waiting for me, loving me.

Actually, the greatest happiness is being able to feel, to be able to express your feelings and to be in love with Life itself.

What is my greatest fear? My greatest fear is fear of my fears. Sure I have different fears. The fear of aggression, — when I see aggressive people or communicate with them I feel deep sadness for them. I am also afraid of loneliness, although I love to be alone sometimes. And I have the fear of, the resistance to coming out of my comfort zone. And I use this fear as my guide. If I feel this fear it means that I need to do exactly that — come out of my comfort zone. I always try to face my fears, make them useful for me. I love the book: The Art of War by Steven Pressfield. He wrote about this very well. I have one more fear — the fear of rejection. Yes, I am kind of selfish)) and I take very hard any rejection.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I love myself the way I am))! One trait I really deplore is most of the time I can’t just relax and do nothing. Something in me always pushes me to worry that I am too lazy, and it always seems to me that I do less than I should. So I constantly push myself to do more and more. And I do the same thing with my closest people, my family.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? Carmen Herrera, Cuban-American abstract minimalist painter. Her passion for art is amazing and she is an example for many artists as the person with tremendous amount of self-confidence and patience.

Among non-living artists — it’s Gustav Klimt. He lived his life the way he wanted. Freedom of thinking and freedom of creating. He was the owner of his life.

What is my greatest extravagance? I have my own style of clothing. It’s a little bit of a gypsy style, little bit of a hippie)). I combine different garbs from different cultures. Most of the clothes I wear are made as a very limited edition, and in my private area I love to be naked.

I also love to touch everyone and everything))! I just don’t understand how things are, whether they are real or not, if I don’t touch them.

On what occasion would I lie? I will lie only if it will save someone’s life. I have my principals in life, and one of them is honesty. Dishonesty — I just can’t afford it! And don’t keep people around me who can lie for a reason or no reason.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Very often, I don’t like starting a new painting)), I love when it’s already painted 50%)), then I can just enjoy the details. Before the opening of exhibitions or my art events I feel so stressed and worried that I can’t communicate with people at all. That always happens on the eve of any event.

When and where was I the happiest in my work? I was in Miami staying at my friend’s apartment. I was making paintings there in a very free style being in love with the ocean. I invited the ocean to come and stay on my canvases, my friend was taking care of me and my needs, so I was only thinking about love and art.

Also I always feel very happy when I am thinking about the time when I had my studio at the house I used to rent for many years in the state of Goa, India. I had a studio with a balcony and an ocean view, and a lot of palm trees in front of me. These 2 places are always in my heart. Now I have my Temple of My Art at Mana Contemporary, Jersey City, NJ, and am happy there as well))!

If I could, what would I change about myself? Nothing. I am the way I am, and I always want enrich myself with knowledge, wisdom, deeper understanding my nature and human nature on the whole.

What is my greatest achievement in work? After 20 years of studying and working I’ve become a very good artist, strong personality, and finally found my own voice in art!)) Albeit always pushing myself to do better than before.

Where would I most like to live? Right now I don’t have the exact place in mind. I am where I should be. But I have a vision that I will have a big house on the ocean shore with a garden, so that my friends can visit me, as was the case when I’d lived in Goa, India for 7 years. I will also create a workshop space — Art Resort. It will be close to my house, but separate space and place. By my nature I am a host)), I love to host people, organize different art and spiritual events.

What is my most treasured possession? My family and my friends, — my tribe is among my most treasured possessions; as well as my talent given me by God. Every day is a treasurer for me!

What is my most marked characteristic? I love life, I am always in love. And I love sex in all its manifestations. Actually everything we do has sexual foundation. I am constantly making love with life.

What is my most inspirational location in my city? Right now I live in Jersey City 15 minutes away from Manhattan and I have my studio at Mana Contemporary. I love my cave — my studio)), as I mentioned before — the Temple of My Art. In NYC my favorite places are Battery Park and Greenwich Village.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink in my city? A sushi place in the West Village, NYC, called Kumo Sushi. I am addicted to sushi)) and the Japanese Cuisine. I love raw food more than the cooked one.

What books influenced my life and how? Nabokov’s Lolita, Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita and The Notes Of The Young Doctor, Josef Campbell’s The Masks Of God, Umberto Eco’s The Name Of The Rose, Dostoevsky’s The Idiot, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years Of Solitude.

They helped me better understand myself at turning points of my life.

Who are my favorite writers? Rumi (Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī) — a 13th century poet and mystic, A. Pushkin, Nabokov, Anton Chekhov, Erich Maria Remarque, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Thomas Mann, Homer, Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? On my last day I would love to listen Indian mantras.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? The Little Prince in this everlasting tale by Saint-Exupery’s, which I call his bible for humanity.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Nikola Tesla, Genghis Khan, Osho (a.k.a. Rajneesh), Georgia O’Keefe. I believe each person we meet in our life is our teacher.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? La Belle Verte. The movie that dissolved my previous philosophy of life by saying to me: Be alive!!! Be connected!!!

What role does art play in my life and work? Art is my life and my work. I came here, to this planet, only to produce art and love. Art is my life force and my air to breath.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? I have many people who love me and follow me, there are tens of thousands of them. I love all of them, and more who are supporting me and trust in me. Supporting artist is supporting life itself. All will come back to you more than double.

Whom would I like to work with in 2017? With artist Mikhail Shemyakin, Larry Gagosian, and an L.A. based art dealer David Kordansky.

Which people in my profession would I love to meet in 2017? I want to meet my Art Patron and my art dealer. “What you seek is seeking you.” ~ Rumi. I would love to meet and collaborate with art dealers: John Corbett and Jim Dempsey, Bridget Donahue.. As well as Carol Greene Gallery, Gladstone Gallery.

What project in 2017 am I looking forward to work on? I have a great idea of my unique 3D Sculpture Project and I want to get the Guggenheim scholarship for that, need to find sponsors for making it come true.

Where can you see me or my work in 2017? You can see my work at the Aqua Art Fair, Miami Beach, FL, December 6-10; at the Prak-Sis Gallery Aug. 25 — Sept. 9; Townley Gallery, Laguna Beach, CA; Gallery Of Music & Art, Las Vegas, NV; and me, you can see me at my Studio B68 at MANA Contemporary, Jersey City, and online — you can just google me or visit my websites: http://www.artabramova.infohttp://www.artabramova.com

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? When my passion does retire it will mean I left this body of mine and went on the next journey in a different universe.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? Artist, curator, gallery owner and art consultant Mi-Yeon Kwon.

Event about LOVE

Artist Ekaterina Abramova

invites you to her event The Temple of my Art

“Whatever you love - you are.” — Rumi

Life is beautiful. And it becomes even more beautiful when you do what you love to do. I have three very important things that I need to have all the time: Love, Art, Nature.

To be alive I need love, to express my love I need art, to create art I need Nature. I believe all of us need these things in our lives.

I was traveling for being more with nature, nature always showing the way to yourself. Nature is the best teacher.

What are your three important things in your life? Let's think and talk about it.

I would love to invite you again to the Temple of My Art, to my studio, on June 7, starting 7 pm.

And I believe for each of us Love will be one of the most important things in life. So let's talk about it, let's feel it and let's see it. Let's search for love. Let's share love and speak about love.

I will wait for you with all my love to discuss love. Let's share love, and not problems.

We can influence the world if we are in love with others and ourselves.

This event will be the first event as a discussion. Most of my works are dedicated to love and relationships. I am sending some of my new art works in this email.

Love comes first. And I would love to hear your ideas about the next topic. What can be the next event about?

The event will take place on Wed., June 7, 7-10pm

at Studio B68, MANA Contemporary

Address and directions:

Master Class - Painting Your Dream.

Feedback from Ariel  Wang

I had an amazing spiritual painting session with the master teacher Ekaterina today. The lesson is completely different than those entertaining painting lessons, where one follows cookie cutter guidance to re-fabricate the same illustration. "Painting your dream" lesson gave us a chance to get in touch with our inner creativity, and let the forms to manifest itself. Ekaterina was very attentive and insightful in guiding students through the painting process. She also has a unique spiritual gift in interpreting visual symbols into life meanings. I would recommend the class to those who are curious about learning more about themselves or want to paint something original.

(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- People will soon be talking about visual art in a new way. Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) gets decidedly quirky on April 27th when this nonprofit and very eclectic arts organization debuts ARTSpeaks , a complete reimagining of the Artist Talk, which debuts on April 27th from 7:30pm -10:00pm at Merseles Studios in Jersey City, NJ.

ARTSpeaks profiles visual artists in a refreshingly fun and original format. Held in the intimate Black Box Theater at Merseles studios, ARTSpeaks features an interview with individual artists, accompanied by projections of their work. The profile segments are followed by an audience Q&A – but with a unique twist. Audience members are encouraged to write down on index cards “Quirky Questions”—basically anything – no matter how off-the-wall or inappropriate – they’ve always wanted to ask an artist. The index cards will read by an ARTSpeaks moderator, ensuring the anonymity of the person asking the question.By delving into craft, the ideas that inspire their work and their life as an artist, ARTSpeaks intends to create a conversation with artists about art that is more honest and wider ranging than what has become acceptable at the typical Artist Talk.

“This is not some dull art appreciation class, but genuine story-telling straight from the heart,” said Lucy Rovetto, Visual Arts Coordinator, JCTC and curator of ARTSPeaks. “We want to provide exposure to artists while promoting a fresh, and deeper dialogue between community and artists. We want to keep it real and more importantly, we want to discover something about art that we don’t already know.”

Both audiences are artists are advised to expected the unexpected. “The Quirky Questions will be fun and they are meant to have no boundaries,” Rovetto explained. “ARTSpeaks artists are those creative individuals willing to let us look up close and personal at their thought process, work process, life experience, philosophy and the honest, plain truth that goes into creating art.”

JCTC’s inaugural ARTSpeaks features Here & Now by Ekaterina Abramova, who explores spirituality by combining painting and graphic art, and You Make Me Feel by Luis Alves, a collage artist who assembles a diverse range of pop culture imagery to form thought-provoking commentary on contemporary society.

The two artists, both devoted to their craft but possessing contrasting sensibilities, work in entirely different mediums yet each have shown work in high-profile shows and galleries throughout the U.S. and elsewhere, attracting a growing following of art lovers, collectors and curators.

Master Class - Painting Your Dream.

I’ll be waiting for you on

Saturday, April 22, 3-7pm at STUDIO B68 at MANA Contemporary in Jersey City

Price: $100SPECIAL DISCOUNT: bring your friend and get 50% off for yourself and for your friend

All art materials, snacks, light drinks are included

My Master Class is unlike any other. I do absolutely different things. Using my knowledge of philosophy and symbols and my vast experience as a painter, I help people fulfill their dreams and intentions. I don't tell students what or which way to paint. I guide them through the process, insisting on no concept but their own, leaving them at the same time full freedom of artistic expression. And therefore, no matter what experience (or no experience) with painting one had in one's lifetime, every participant will paint his or her own beautiful painting. The Master Class begins with a meditation that releases our anxieties, and opens up our creative potential. This also allows us to concentrate and discover our strongest intention, the dream we want to come true. Then, under my guidance, the students begin to put their discoveries on paper or canvas. As the work progresses, I correct, suggest, and explain the basics of use of color, composition, and structure, as well as the major elements of art of painting.

Master class Painting Your Dream is a unique opportunity to work with the subconscious using color and composition in order to find out one’s intentions and goals in life, and realize them. The Master class helps to look inside yourself, express your thoughts and feelings through creativity. This is like a snapshot of your own Self. It’s like coming face to face with yourself and helping yourself, discovering your creative potential, and changing with ease your present-day reality. The basics of visual arts are akin to those, on which psychology and process of harmonization of personality are based. Thus, the Master Class becomes a powerful instrument of self-cognizance, self-awareness, and personal growth. It’s an amazing journey to one-self. We leave our dreams, intentions, and hopes on a piece of paper using paints. We add colors and forms enjoying creative freedom.

And the most unique and powerful feature of my workshops is the fact that the students paint their own dreams to make them come true, and after 3-4 hours of each class each student comes home with his or her own Picture of Dream.

I believe in my destiny and spiritual energy, and I believe that we can be working together with you and be those God’s hands that help many people fulfill their dreams.

There will be refreshments and drinks, a warm and welcoming atmosphere of my Temple)) and the presentation of my art: I will talk about my life story, my art's philosophy, images, colors, composition. You'll get to peek into an Artist's mind and, of course, to see many of my paintings in flesh)).

Studio Warming Party January 7.2017

My dear friends,

Thank you so much for coming yesterday to my Studio Warming Party. It was not easy to make. Snow and strong wind made very difficult to walk and to drive. Many of you couldn't make it. And I am very thankful to all of you who couldn't come but sent many great wishes and congratulations, all type of kind words.

The event was amazing actually!

From the beginning we didn't expect anything because of the weather. We thought it could be that nobody would come, but so many people came!!!

Those of you who couldn’t make yesterday can come next week))!!!

Because I will have a second event in my studio next week or so. Will update you all in a few days.
