The Heroine’s Journey of Ekaterina Abramova
Posted by PETERDEKUSTERonSEPTEMBER 5, 2017
What is the best thing that I love about my work? My work is my life. My whole life I do what I love. So I can say I am lucky))! It’s not easy but it’s worth it. Artist’s life is absolutely amazing journey always unpredictable and full of surprises. Not only good surprises but always important ones for you to grow as a human being and artist.
An artist shows the way to others and must be highly educated and spiritual person.
I love to learn, I am learning every moment when I am at the canvas, something wiser and much more powerful than I am myself painting through me, and this feeling is so strong and beautiful that I can only keep going, keep making love with life and art.
My artist statement is — In my art, I am searching for Man.
And my mission — to dig that Man out and bring Him forth in each of us.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? I think happiness is happiness)), it can’t be perfect or imperfect. And my happiness is my freedom, my art, my Tribe — the people I love and care about, and travels. Actually I am happy almost every time, even when I cry and feel sad, — at the same time I am happy because I feel, I can express my feeling and I am alive! Every day I am learning from the world around and myself — so this is also happiness. To know yourself — is happiness. I have people around me who I can rely on. My family. 3 absolutely beautiful and talented kids, my husband who understands me and my nature, my friends who are here for me, and I am always here for them. I am very happy to be in my studio working, thinking, painting, and I know when I am done for today then I have my tribe waiting for me, loving me.
Actually, the greatest happiness is being able to feel, to be able to express your feelings and to be in love with Life itself.
What is my greatest fear? My greatest fear is fear of my fears. Sure I have different fears. The fear of aggression, — when I see aggressive people or communicate with them I feel deep sadness for them. I am also afraid of loneliness, although I love to be alone sometimes. And I have the fear of, the resistance to coming out of my comfort zone. And I use this fear as my guide. If I feel this fear it means that I need to do exactly that — come out of my comfort zone. I always try to face my fears, make them useful for me. I love the book: The Art of War by Steven Pressfield. He wrote about this very well. I have one more fear — the fear of rejection. Yes, I am kind of selfish)) and I take very hard any rejection.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I love myself the way I am))! One trait I really deplore is most of the time I can’t just relax and do nothing. Something in me always pushes me to worry that I am too lazy, and it always seems to me that I do less than I should. So I constantly push myself to do more and more. And I do the same thing with my closest people, my family.
Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? Carmen Herrera, Cuban-American abstract minimalist painter. Her passion for art is amazing and she is an example for many artists as the person with tremendous amount of self-confidence and patience.
Among non-living artists — it’s Gustav Klimt. He lived his life the way he wanted. Freedom of thinking and freedom of creating. He was the owner of his life.
What is my greatest extravagance? I have my own style of clothing. It’s a little bit of a gypsy style, little bit of a hippie)). I combine different garbs from different cultures. Most of the clothes I wear are made as a very limited edition, and in my private area I love to be naked.
I also love to touch everyone and everything))! I just don’t understand how things are, whether they are real or not, if I don’t touch them.
On what occasion would I lie? I will lie only if it will save someone’s life. I have my principals in life, and one of them is honesty. Dishonesty — I just can’t afford it! And don’t keep people around me who can lie for a reason or no reason.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Very often, I don’t like starting a new painting)), I love when it’s already painted 50%)), then I can just enjoy the details. Before the opening of exhibitions or my art events I feel so stressed and worried that I can’t communicate with people at all. That always happens on the eve of any event.
When and where was I the happiest in my work? I was in Miami staying at my friend’s apartment. I was making paintings there in a very free style being in love with the ocean. I invited the ocean to come and stay on my canvases, my friend was taking care of me and my needs, so I was only thinking about love and art.
Also I always feel very happy when I am thinking about the time when I had my studio at the house I used to rent for many years in the state of Goa, India. I had a studio with a balcony and an ocean view, and a lot of palm trees in front of me. These 2 places are always in my heart. Now I have my Temple of My Art at Mana Contemporary, Jersey City, NJ, and am happy there as well))!
If I could, what would I change about myself? Nothing. I am the way I am, and I always want enrich myself with knowledge, wisdom, deeper understanding my nature and human nature on the whole.
What is my greatest achievement in work? After 20 years of studying and working I’ve become a very good artist, strong personality, and finally found my own voice in art!)) Albeit always pushing myself to do better than before.
Where would I most like to live? Right now I don’t have the exact place in mind. I am where I should be. But I have a vision that I will have a big house on the ocean shore with a garden, so that my friends can visit me, as was the case when I’d lived in Goa, India for 7 years. I will also create a workshop space — Art Resort. It will be close to my house, but separate space and place. By my nature I am a host)), I love to host people, organize different art and spiritual events.
What is my most treasured possession? My family and my friends, — my tribe is among my most treasured possessions; as well as my talent given me by God. Every day is a treasurer for me!
What is my most marked characteristic? I love life, I am always in love. And I love sex in all its manifestations. Actually everything we do has sexual foundation. I am constantly making love with life.
What is my most inspirational location in my city? Right now I live in Jersey City 15 minutes away from Manhattan and I have my studio at Mana Contemporary. I love my cave — my studio)), as I mentioned before — the Temple of My Art. In NYC my favorite places are Battery Park and Greenwich Village.
What is my favorite place to eat and drink in my city? A sushi place in the West Village, NYC, called Kumo Sushi. I am addicted to sushi)) and the Japanese Cuisine. I love raw food more than the cooked one.

They helped me better understand myself at turning points of my life.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? On my last day I would love to listen Indian mantras.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Nikola Tesla, Genghis Khan, Osho (a.k.a. Rajneesh), Georgia O’Keefe. I believe each person we meet in our life is our teacher.
Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? La Belle Verte. The movie that dissolved my previous philosophy of life by saying to me: Be alive!!! Be connected!!!
What role does art play in my life and work? Art is my life and my work. I came here, to this planet, only to produce art and love. Art is my life force and my air to breath.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? I have many people who love me and follow me, there are tens of thousands of them. I love all of them, and more who are supporting me and trust in me. Supporting artist is supporting life itself. All will come back to you more than double.
